“He heard the growl behind him again, this time much closer. . . . He turned and looked up as the growl erupted into a deafening roar. He opened his mouth to scream, but his terrified cries were engulfed in the rage and ferocity of that roar.”
When big-game hunter Matt Hayden sets out to the Arizona desert to capture a fabled bear-like creature, he finds himself caught in the middle of two evils. The beast is awake and wants revenge. It won't stop until there's blood. Meanwhile, the forgotten Tonowa Indians fight for their lives and their land against a corrupt, government-funded steel company with mysterious, ulterior motives. Determined to win both fights, Matt and a company of local Tonowa Indians track the beast deep into the mountain where it lives, and they soon find themselves fighting for survival against the forgotten mythical creatures that live there. But can they find the beast before it finds them?

Garden of the Gods edition by Stephen J Stirling Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Garden of the Gods, written by Steven J. Stirling, is the third book by the author. With the main character, Matt Hayden, Stirling tells a story of a man finding his passion for hunting again, only to be embroiled in a conflict between a native peoples, living in a land for generations, and a corporation hell-bent on removing said peoples for the sake of profit.
I liked this book, moved along fairly well and easy to follow. If this became a movie (silver screen, TV, or straight to DVD), I could picture some of the actors playing in it. Sam Elliot as Thatcher, Russel Means or Wes Studi as Stone Bear, James Cromwell as Webb.
I liked the reference to government giving in to big business and money instead of what is right by the marginalized. Very period considering the issues surrounding the Dakota pipeline. To add, the protector called Nyah Gawaheh isn't fiction only found in the book's pages. It is one of the stories told by Native American peoples including the Iroquois, Seneca, and Cayuga. To use as a protector, instead of just man, is a nice touch.
Hoping for another book to be released by the author. He does have a gift.
I bought this book after Lindsey Stirling (Stephen's daughter and well-known violinist) posted about it on her Facebook page. The book was an excellent read, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The subject matter is not something I would normally be interested in, but I love a chance to read a book I wouldn't normally read and see what I think of it. In this case, I am glad to say that I loved the book. The story had a lot of "meat" in it, meaning it was a full story that always had something interesting and relevant happening. There was never a dull moment in the story for me. The further I got into the book, the more difficult it was to put it down. I found myself always wanting to read more and find out what happened next or how a situation turned out. I found the conflict between Native Americans, mythical creatures and the government very interesting. I also feel like a gained a little more respect/understanding for Native Americans and their beliefs, values and culture. This was a great story to read, and I will gladly recommend it to others.
First of all I have to say I'm biased. I'm biased because this book is written by a man who is the father to someone that has changed my life. I will never forget the love and guidance that his daughter has shown to me.... With full transparency out of the way..... Garden of the Gods is written a superb adventure fiction book and is one you should read. Not only because it's just a well written great book but because the man behind the writing is even more impressive than the book itself. We live in a world where we need to appreciate not just the content, but the creator of the content. This is one of those times where if anyone knows who I am or trusts a kind persons's recommendation... this is worth your purchase for more reasons than you know.
Garden of the Gods is the type of book where if you like adventure fiction, the story sucks you along and you don't really want to put the book down because you have to know what happens next. There are points along the story where you feel like you know the direction things are headed and you're not sure what more could be written in the remaining pages when things take a big turn and send the protagonists into another level of adventure. The characters fit the standard archetypes of their roles, although more time is spent developing the protagonists and I feel the antagonists get the short end of the time stick and are kind of one dimensional. There's always usually a very interesting, dynamic hero to any story but it's something else to see someone "evil" that can make the reader question just how bad this person is and what their intentions truly are. Unfortunately Garden of the Gods lacks a complex villain but at the same time it's understandable considering the short length of the book. There are definitely enough characters (especially when you consider the man vs man vs nature dynamic set up in the story) and the foundations of a setting and story to warrant a much longer book. After finishing the book over the course of two days, I was left with the feeling of wanting more.
