The man woke up and opened his eyes. He closed them and rubbed them. The woman was not beside him." In very short order, that simplistic opening turns into a chilling mystery, filled with hypocritical and duplicitous politicians, drug-addicted prostitutes, a brutal step-father and like-minded soldiers, beautiful women, philosophical professors, childhood bullies, and zen-like scholars. Unique style and fascinating story! Even weeks after finishing the book, my mind frequently returns to it. I highly recommend it!
With Becomes The Happy Man, Mallery has achieved something unique and admirable. His laconic prose and deliberate vagaries invite the reader to create as much as absorb. Yes, there is a story with a beginning, a transitional middle, and an end, but Mallery declines to guide the reader, childlike, through his creation. You've got to earn it, folks. This novel is a puzzling, troublesome, and unsettling invention, and a remarkable first effort. Kudos, Mr. Mallery!
Fascinating book. The unique writing style took some getting used to, having to identify characters by a description rather than a name. But I found myself drawn into the story. The way the story was written, jumping forward and backward in the story timeline always kept me on my toes. I would read a chapter excited to see what happens next, only to find the next chapter picking up from the end of a previous chapter, which had left me hanging before.
The book was not defined in a specific time or era, yet Mallery manages to draw similarities to historical events and politics that tie in beautifully to the plot. A very compelling read. I found myself unable to put it down until I read it to the end.
I've often started reading a book, only to get into it a couple of chapters and wonder, "Where is this going? Do I really want to stick around to find out?" This is one of those books. The writer uses a unique story-telling technique, avoiding proper nouns completely, and playing with the English language in an intriguing and fascinating way. But along about page 30, I began to think, "This book has style, but does it have a story?" Well, rest assured, it does. Politics, war, romance, family dynamics; this book deals with them all before it concludes, and it deals with them well. The story becomes deeper, darker, and more complicated as it proceeds, and it is capped off by what was, to me, a surprising ending. I'm glad I kept reading, and I am looking forward to the next book by Rick Mallery.
When I first started reading this book I found it very difficult to read because of its repetitious dialogue. As the story unfolded I got used to the author's unique writing style. This style of writing is very difficult to do because there are no names to identify characters. The writer has to keep track of each character and make these characters clear and concise for the reader to understand. The author does a commendable job not only with character identification by also by hooking the reader into the story which jumps around one man's life as he grows from a boy into a man.
It is a sad and tragic story that follows the life of one man. We see him as a young boy beaten and abused by his mother's lover. As he grows into a young man he works hard and does not share his thoughts with anyone but chooses to keep his mind active and educated in spite of the absence of guidance by his wayward mother. He finds love and much tragedy along his travels to find happiness. He searches for something to heal himself and to make sense of all the evil that men do around him. Read whether he finds what he is seeking in this unusual story of a man's quest for fulfillment,
